Coming-of-Age Day 2011

Big Sister and Little Brother and Papa have strongly suggested in the past not to take pictures of people on the street because of privacy issues. So instead of going out to the shrine to take pictures of young women in kimono, I decided to post another catalog cover. It's a public publication and it gives the company, Joyful Eli, publicity. Rental catalogs are coming to the house already. If we make arrangements early, we can get a discount. We're not sure what her schedule will be like so we will wait. The catalog above comes from Yamato Kimono Rental. The photo below is from their catalog.

The kimono above and the one below come from Sakura Eternity. There are many different styles. Click on the photos to enlarge them so you can see the patterns of the kimono, the accessories, and the models' different hairstyles.

Things to buy at the Shrine on Coming-of-Age Day

Daruma for sale. Buy one, make a wish, fill in one eye and then when the wish comes true fill in the other eye. They are taken to the temple on the first visit of the new year to be burned.

Caged balloon animals.

Bagged cotton candy.

Small punch balls filled with water. You don't really punch them, you pat them. You wrap the string around your finger and bounce them under your palm.

Coming-of-Age Day

Everyone was on the way home when I went out to take pictures. I snapped this in a hurry as people sped by. Everyone disappeared except the young woman in the kimono. Click to enlarge the picture and you will see at least three people who aren't there.

The drummers were on their way home, too. All the drums were wrapped and waiting to be loaded onto the truck.
