Shell
Look! There was a "shell" over its eyes. It sure left a lot of details behind. Look how fuzzy it was!

Cicada
This cicada was sitting on the chair on our porch. They can sit very quietly for a very long time. Holly Thompson mentions cicada in her HTJ interview posted on the 28th.

The Real Thing
This is a cicada. It was sitting on a piece of plastic that I was drying on the balcony. I took many pictures of the cicada. I moved the plastic around to different angles. The cicada never moved. I was carrying it into the house to take more pictures of it under better light and all of sudden it spun around and flew away. I thought it was dead!

Old Summer Friends

It seemed the cicadas started up a little late this year. They climbed out from under the dirt and have "sung" nonstop ever since. We have a lot of these holes in our garden. We also have several of the brown shells they leave behind.
This was the first cicada I have seen this summer. He stayed on this wall for a long time.
