Children use white terrycloth towels to clean the floors, stairs and desks in kindergarten, elementary, junior high, and high school. At Big Sister and Little Brother's kindergarten, each towel had to be marked. One (left) was marked with yuka, floor. The other (right) was marked with tsukue, desk. One was used only for cleaning the floor, the other for the desks and other surfaces. The rags are soaked with water only.
Hiragana was used because kindergarteners don't usually read kanji. Many children can read hiragana before kindergarten. That black pen is a permanent marker. It's used to mark all the crayons, markers, etc.
At their school, mothers had to make them by hand! It's a folded hand towel sewn around the edges with a big "X" sewn in the middle. Zokin are sold in stores. Do a search of this blog for another post about zokin or click on the labels below.
