HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM JAPAN!!!!
This kanji means "peace" or "harmony". Papa made these cards on the computer. akemashite omedetou gozaimasu is the greeting for the new year in Japanese. (The u makes the "o" long.)

hello,
i love your blog. i am an anthropologist and also japanese american. i visited japan once a few years ago and your blog helps me understand so much about every day japan. and i felt a kinship when i saw your picture of different type of tree supports--i have similar pictures! keep up the good and interesting work.
