Japanese Christmas Cake

Strawberry shortcake is sold as a Christmas cake in Japan. It is a sponge cake (not Angel Food) with cream icing. There are strawberries on top and in the middle of the traditional Japanese Christmas cake.

Many other kinds of cakes are sold daily as well. At this shop there was a chocolate cake with strawberries, too. Maybe some customers will choose it for their Christmas cake. The French Buche Noel, the cake shaped like a yule log, is becoming more available, too. The German Stollen can be found in bakeries at this time of year, too.

P. S. Birthday candles are sold with the strawberry shortcake. Many years ago at a party, my students actually sang "Happy Birthday" to Jesus. That is not traditional.
